At Massing PR, we believe that genuine Advocacy and Community Building is not just about building respect for promoting a common belief. These activities are also strategic tools that generate measurable financial and reputational returns. Our core philosophy, Building Purpose, applies whether we are advising a client or supporting a cause.

One compelling example of this strategy in action comes from the personal pro bono experience of our founder, Jen Massing Harris, who applied the core Massing PR model and utilized the firm's network to drive success at the historic Parque Zaragoza in Austin, TX.

The Challenge: Quantifying Goodwill

Non-profit and community work often gets relegated to "soft metrics" like anecdotal goodwill. But for an executive business audience, credibility is built on numbers. When Jen organized community engagement initiatives at Parque Zaragoza, including park cleanups and community events, she knew she had to translate the raw passion of volunteers into a clear financial metric.

The crucial question: How do you accurately quantify the value of a volunteer hour?

The Solution: Adhering to Industry Benchmarks

To ensure the calculation was transparent and aligned with a data-informed methodology, Jen adhered to the standard used by the non-profit sector: the Independent Sector Value of Volunteer Time.

Here is a simple, three-step method that anyone can use to calculate the economic value of volunteer labor:

Step 1: Establish Your Total Hours

  • Action: Meticulously track every hour spent on the project (from planning meetings to on-site event days). For tracking event days, assume an industry-standard average of 3 hours per volunteer.

  • Parque Zaragoza Result: The project yielded 435 hours from 145 documented volunteers.

Step 2: Use the Verifiable State Rate

  • Action: Do not  rely on internal estimates or pay rates. Find an official, verifiable State rate from the Independent Sector for the year the service was rendered.

  • Parque Zaragoza Result: Using the 2019 Texas rate of $26.79 per hour, the derived labor value was defensible and credible.

Step 3: Calculate the Equivalent Labor Value

  • Action: Multiply the total verifiable hours by the official state rate.

  • Parque Zaragoza Result: This calculation  yielded a quantifiable value of $11,643 for equivalent labor—a number that was used in grant applications and financial reports.

The Strategic Leverage: From $11K to $50K

The Parque Zaragoza volunteer dollar figure was far more than just a number—it was a strategic asset.

A successful grant application was authored, supported by Massing PR's virtual team network with writing assistance. Furthermore, the project leveraged our model's core strengths in press release drafting and third-party liaisons, ensuring that the community efforts were professionally amplified.

Demonstrating a commitment of more than $11,643 in community-mobilized labor was a vital proof point in the competitive grant application process. At the time, the City of Austin was determining where to allocate significant bond money for asset reinvestment across its 500+ parks

The community engagement provided compelling evidence of the depth of commitment to Parque Zaragoza as a cherished and viable green space worthy of public investment. This ultimately helped unlock a $50,000 ACL Music Festival Grant awarded through a non-profit foundation.

The Takeaway for B2B Leaders

Jen’s pro bono experience with Parque Zaragoza demonstrates the core of Massing PR's current offering: the ability to translate passion into tangible, strategic capital.
